How I Would Govern

Have a question about how I would serve? Email me at steve@steveforrocklin.com. I'd welcome the conversation.

I would start by listening and gathering the facts. That means hearing from parents, teachers, school staff, administrators, students, and community members, including people who see an issue differently than I do.

I would look closely at staff recommendations, costs, and legal requirements. I would also ask how a decision would affect students and the people working in our schools.

For each decision, I would ask: "How will this help our students?" I would want to understand the goal and how we would measure progress.

We won't always agree, and that's part of serving on a school board. What matters is how we work through those differences.

I would listen, ask questions, and try to understand the concern behind someone's position. We can disagree on an issue and still treat each other with respect.

The board needs to have difficult conversations and make decisions.  Afterward, we still have to work together. I would do my part to keep those relationships strong and keep our attention on what students need.

Parents and teachers both have an important role in helping students succeed. Parents know their children better than anyone and should be welcomed into discussions about their children's education. They deserve clear information, access, and an opportunity to raise concerns.

Teachers spend every school day working with students. Their training, experience, and judgment deserve respect. I would want the board to hear from both parents and educators when making decisions that affect our schools.

The best schools are created when parents and educators work together. I want both at the table.

The board sets the direction for the district and holds the superintendent accountable for results.

Trustees set policy, approve the budget and curriculum, establish long-term goals, and hire and evaluate the superintendent. We should ask clear questions about student progress and whether our resources are helping us meet those goals.

The superintendent is responsible for running the district. Principals lead their schools, and teachers lead their classrooms.

I would ask tough questions and expect follow-through. I would also respect those responsibilities and give our employees the support they need to do their jobs well.

Yes. I would consider each issue on its merits and make my own decision.

I would listen carefully to families, students, district employees, and fellow trustees. I would look at the facts, ask questions, and stay open to a different view when there is a good reason to reconsider.

I would explain the reasons for each vote. You deserve to understand my decisions, even when we disagree.

I don't believe all five board members should think alike. Different perspectives are healthy and can help us make better decisions. We should be willing to listen to one another, ask questions, and still work together for our students. That's the kind of trustee I intend to be.
